It's been one year, since I began life as a "full time photographer."
I won't lie, it hasn't always been easy - but it has been amazing. I've worked with fantastic couples, families, and other photographers. I've learned so much about myself, my business, and have grown as a photographer. I've been in business since 2009, but I've grown the most in just this past year.

But all of that, is just the tip of the iceberg. Because along the way, I've also been working on something much, much, bigger.

I've been hinting at it, leaking information here and there all year. But now, the time has finally arrived to officially announce the big news.

You may already know Lori Coleman, owner and photographer at Light+Ink. I've mentioned her in many of my blog and Facebook posts, so if you don't know her by now, study up! Going forward, you're going to hear a lot more about her - and from her!

Ok, drumroll please...... and now add the cymbal crash and wild applause!

Perrotta Creative and Light+Ink have merged together to become:  Lori & Erin Photography!

Lori and I have been working together for over two years now, offering our clients many of the same services. So, in order to bring you all better products and a better photographic experience we've decided it was time to join forces and create one business.

You might be wondering – what does this mean to me? What has changed? And if you're not... well, you are now!

The answer is pretty simple actually... not much! We have a brand new name and a great new website, but other than that we're still the same people! We offer the same services you're already used to, just improved! By merging together, we'll be able to help more people get great photography. Our day-to-day portrait tasks and communications will be taken care of by Lori, while I will continue to focus my attention on our awesome wedding couples.

Current wedding clients: Your contract is still valid. Nothing is changing there, Perrotta Creative will fulfill your contracts. You will have the option of switching your contract over to the new business name, but it is not required.

Portrait Clients: Now, instead of one photographer, you have the option of choosing either Lori or myself to photograph your portrait session. In some cases, you may get us both anyway!

Hey 2013 how's it going?  Wow you got here fast.
Between our own holiday craziness and fun, and photographing some of your holiday memories I almost missed your arrival!

Before we dive head first into what is going to be a pretty incredible year, I want to share some photographs from my last two weddings at the Edward Harris House. I've had so much fun working with the incredible staff, and loving couples that I've had the opportunity to work with there.

These last two weddings were obviously no exception. The location, decorated for the season with soft candlelight, and lovely wreaths made everything special. No detail was left untouched, which emphasized the feeling of love and romance that was definitely in the air.

And my oh my, these couples were so in love... I'm so honored and blessed to have been a part of making their wedding day complete. Thus, concluding my 2012.

So... welcome 2013, I can't wait to see what you'll bring. I am excited to be surrounded by great people, family and friends, and all of the love that you will bring.

Every year, on December 24th, I receive a call from my father.
"Hey Erin? Do you want to go shopping with me today?"
Ok, to his credit, sometimes it's early, some years it's December 23rd.
 

And every year, I always go-why you ask? Because nearly 12 years later, it's tradition.

We all have our Christmas traditions, some humorous, some sentimental, some just downright weird.
For example, taking the kids to see Santa, even though, last year, you remember them having a complete and total meltdown on his lap.

Or the cut-out Christmas cookies that your Mom swears she'll "never make again" because of how long it takes.
Yet, we make them, year after year.
Or the annual viewing of National Lampoon's Christmas vacation, complete with recitation during the funniest parts - verbatim.  
Or the beloved "blue turd" Christmas ornament that must, must, must be hung on the tree, every year, or else the tree is not complete.
They're all traditions, whether handed down, married into, or brand new…and they all make my family uniquely mine.

I huff, and puff, and make jokes about what a pain it is to be last minute Christmas shopping.
I mean honestly, I've had my own Christmas shopping done for at least a week now.

So why do I continue to go Christmas shopping with my dad, two days before Christmas?
I know the hustle and bustle I'm going to face, and the occasional craziness, that is last minute Christmas shopping.

I go because I know that every year, for a few hours, a few days before Christmas, I get my daddy to myself.

It's easy to get caught up in the little things that irk us about the holidays. But if the past week has taught us anything at all, it's to cherish the people we love a little more, because we never know what tomorrow brings.

And so, today I cherish these traditions a little bit more. And as time passes, I look forward to the little traditions we already celebrate, and the new traditions yet to come.

Wherever you are this year, and whoever you're with - give them an extra hug,
tell them you love them in the best way you know how… and cherish your traditions.



 

Winnie, Amy and Steve's first love and fur baby, has competition... stinkin' cute competition.

We just love seeing our former wedding couples as their families grow. First with the wedding, then they get a puppy
(or vice versa in some cases). Then, when the time is right, along come babies. Super cute babies.
I was so excited when I heard Amy & Steve were expecting a little girl, and was thrilled to get to meet her last week.

We arrived, piles of gear in tow, ready to create beautiful images. But as we started bringing our things in, we noticed among the clothing choices, and blankets that Amy had prepared for us... a snowboard?
Apparantely, Steve wanted to throw us a little creative curve ball. His request? An image which incorporated his snowboard.
Challenge accepted, and with Lori's help, challenge conquered!

Congratulations Amy and Steve, you're going to be truly amazing parents.
We are so happy for you, and wish you all the best on this new adventure into parenthood!

I can't believe we're already blogging the last wedding of 2012. It honestly feels like we just got started this year, and here it is - December. We've been so blessed with wonderful couples, and Anthony and Brianne are no exception. Easy going, sweet and fun were definitely the words of the day.

We began our wedding day, at their homes. Brianne got ready with her Mom and Sister alongside her. All of the beautiful details fit perfectly together. And I just love that Brianne wore her Mother's wedding dress. It was just perfect for her.

And while I was with the ladies, Lori visited Anthony and the guys. A lot of laughing ensued!

The ceremony was held at the Church of the Assumption in Fairport, NY. As it's Lori's church, for her it was like being home!

After the ceremony, we headed over to Midvale Country Club for some time together with the newlyweds. As cold as it was, we were thankful it wasn't snowing as we climbed into golf carts and headed out onto the course.

We finished up at Midvale as the last of the daylight left us, and on we went to the Harro East Ballroom in Rochester NY, where the cocktail hour was getting underway. The night continued on, with the band keeping the dance floor moving and our photo booth providing some extra entertainment!

Thank you Anthony and Brianne for welcoming us into your day, what a great way to end our year. We wish you many blessings always, as you move forward with your life together. Congratulations!

Want to know the magic formula for family portrait session with two children under the age of five? There's a few items to remember when planning your outdoor family portrait with young kids.

1) Let them play! The more we get to have fun and run around, the more likely it is we'll see some true smiles and maybe even some laughter. At Tiffany & Jared's family session below, as soon as we challenged the boys to a race, it was on. They had so much fun running up and down the nature trails! Those are the moments you want us to capture, right? Don't be afraid to let your kids, "be kids" in front of the camera.

2) Plan for enough time: If you know that your babes are a little shy with people, a half an hour of time with a photographer might not be enough time to get those cute moments caught on camera. After more time together with us, kids are much less shy (this works for adults too!), and much more willing to be themselves in front of the lens.

3) This one is HUGE...more important than the last two. Ready? Are you sure? Ok, here goes.

The secret is "A.B.C."

Always. Bring. Candy.

Period.

At Tiffany & Jared's family session, we did exactly that. The kids played, and ran and had fun. And when they weren't having fun or not being on their best "little kid behavior", we had the back up plan-M&M's. At the end of the session, I know that Tiffany was a little worried that we may not have caught their cute smiles.

But when Mom saw her teaser photograph on Facebook, her fears were put to rest, and a proud Mom emerged.

Tiffany, Jared & Family, thank you for a super cute November session. Tiffany, I know these photographs mean a lot to you, so even if we need a bagful of candy to capture those smiles, I'm in, always. I'm so thankful for you and always happy to photograph your family.

It has been exactly 11 months today since my world changed completely. 11 months ago-I became a full-time professional photographer.

Don't get me wrong, I've been a professional photographer for 4 years now. But up until January 2012, I was a part-time photographer, dreaming of the day I would be able to take the next step. Now, here I am, and honestly couldn't be happier. It hasn't even been a year, but it already feels so normal.

And so, with the Thanksgiving holiday on our doorstep, I need to take a quick timeout to be thankful for a few things.

FIrst off, I'm thankful for my work-wife, Lori A. Coleman. Without her to keep me sane, I'd think that having full conversations with my dog is perfectly normal every day.

Along with that, I'm thankful for my dog, who never let's me forget when it's time to eat, play or walk.

And of course, as always, I'm thankful for my husband, who has supported me from day one. Thanks Matt, I love you!

I'm also very blessed with a supportive family, most of which even let me take their family portraits or photograph their weddings.

I know it's a little cliche to blog about how grateful I am for my family and friends.
However, this year has been one of the craziest, and best roller coaster rides of my life. So, cliche or not, it's the truth.
My small business would not be possible without the support of my family, friends and amazing clients. Thank you ALL.
 

Happy Thanksgiving!

Ok, I can't leave a blog post without sharing some photographs. Here's some recent photographs of my awesome parents, and my brother's family. I think they're a pretty good looking family if I do say so myself....

We're coming up on the holidays, and sadly we have reached the end of our 2012 "wedding season."
(as your reading, please pause to insert a big sigh and "awwwww" here)

But that's typically when what I call "Baby season" begins.
(now insert an excited "hooray!" here)

Every year, it seems as though, when our wedding season slows down, we see an increase in the number of newborns and their families we photograph. Hmm....coincidence?

In any case this winter is not going to be an exception to the rule... we can't wait!

Without further ado, here's the first little cutie of "Baby Season!"
(An over-enthusiastic "hip, hip hooray" and wild applause goes here)

Lori and I were watching the weather...watching, waiting and praying that Hurricane Sandy would wait just a few days after Saturday before hitting the Rochester area. Thankfully for us, it did.

Unfortunately, even though it wasn't a hurricane, we still had to work around some rain on Kari and DJ's wedding day. In all honesty, no spirits were dampened in the making of this wedding day. The veil on the other hand... that's another story.

Kari and DJ, along with their bridal party and family are easy going, and incredibly fun-loving. We loved their ability to roll with whatever the day handed us. We laughed A LOT throughout the day, even as the clouds rolled in and the rain started to pick up. It proved to us that rain can be fun too, we just had to think even more creatively than usual!

Our day began at Kari's parents home. Even as some last minute details were prepped, the atmosphere remained relaxed and casual. That being said, for all of the casualness in the air, there was no lack of gorgeousness in Kari... wow. Stunning.

The ceremony was held at St. Matthews Church, in Kari's hometown of Livonia NY. With family and friends gathered around, from all over the country, you could tell this couple is loved. As they spoke their vows, they only had eyes for each other.

When the ceremony ended, the bridal party fun began... this group nearly brought us to tears with laughter! First stop, before the heavy rain rolled in-Vitale Park on Conesus Lake.

Kari & DJ wanted a little bit of nature, and a little bit of urban brought into their wedding photographs. So on the way back to their Village Gate reception, we stopped at a few of my favorite places in the city, Parkleigh and Starry Nites Cafe. A huge thank you to the patrons at Starry Nites Cafe for letting Kari & DJ have a photo op.

After that, we finished outdoor photographs at Village Gate just as the rain and wind picked up. It couldn't have been timed out more perfectly! As much as we would love to take credit for holding off the rain, it was obvious that Mother Nature knew exactly what to do.

The reception was ROCKIN' as Joe of Q Music Productions kept the party on the dance floor til the very end. What an amazing day for two amazing people, congratulations Kari and DJ!

The very first time we met Andrea and Tom, we spent nearly two hours just talking over coffee. We talked and joked together, about everything, and nothing all at once. It was as if we'd known each other for years.

Therefore, Lori and I knew that during this engagement session, spontaneous laughter and gorgeous smiles were inevitable.

Andrea's laughter is adorable. When she does, it makes everyone around her smile-especially Tom. And we could see, that after three years of a long distance relationship, being able to laugh together is so very important to them both.

They met in college at Geneseo, on a school trip to Letchworth State Park, so we'll let you take a guess on where we went for their engagement session... I dare you to guess "the mall."

The weather was perfect and the fall foliage was gorgeous. It was as if the day was meant for us. So as we laughed our way through the entire session, we also had the chance to enjoy the beauty of nature around us. Ah-mazing...to say the least.

When Tara arrived at the chapel to get ready, the first thing she did was order a pizza. In fact, she mentioned that she wasn't sure what the fuss was all about. There were no nerves to be seen anywhere, which is one of the things we love about her. She's a no nonsense kind of girl, with a great heart. Both Tara and Jamie knew that this day would come, and when it did, it would be perfect because they were together.

But when she put her dress on, and the chapel bells rang just before the ceremony started, her face lit up.

The ceremony was held at the Westminster Hall and Chapel, in Mendon NY. For as laid back as Tara and Jamie both were before the ceremony, there was no lack of real, love-filled emotion during the ceremony. Everything was there, from tears to laughter, through the vows and a very unique "tree-planting ceremony."  Similar to a Unity Candle, Tara and Jamie poured the dirt and water into the pot together, thus planting the tree of their new life together.

The reception, held at Wildwood Country Club was a great night. It was filled with even more great moments, including a Father-Daughter dance that nearly brought us to tears. We've heard many Father-Daughter songs in our time as wedding photographers, but this one was brand new to us. The song was Edwin McCain's "Walk with You." Chosen by Tara's parents, it was a surprise to Tara when they started dancing. Oh. My. Goodness. If you haven't heard it, give it a listen. After you do, get back to us and tell us if YOU held it together.

Shelly says "We are complete opposites, but have everything in common."

Now, I'm not entirely sure what that means. But I don't have to understand it to know that Shelly loves Ben, and Ben loves Shelly.

And me? Well I love people in love, especially when they're family.
I've mentioned my large and ever growing family right?
Well, Ben is my cousin and Shelly has been his love, and a part of our family for a long time.
But next year at this time, they'll finally make it official. I think I'm the lucky one though, because I get to photograph it.

Up first though...the engagement session!

The Parma Town Hall Park, is right around the corner from where I grew up. I have many fond memories of that park. It's where I learned to play softball and soccer. And as a kid, my parents and I helped to build the original wooden playground. Pretty sure that shows my age a little bit...since the wooden playground has since been replaced by a more colorful, plastic and metal structure. I digress as usual...

The park also offers some fun trails through the woods, and at this time of year, it was beautiful.

A walk in the woods with your love and your dog... how could life get any better?
Ben and Shelly-Congratulations! I can't wait for your wedding next October!

Lori and I have been watching this wedding unfold for over a year.

Call us psychic, but from the rustic lanterns, to the colored glass bottles filled with warm fall flowers, even down to the apple cider favors, we knew the dream that Jared and Jen (mostly Jen) had envisioned.

Or was it all that pinning on Pinterest that gave it away…eh?
Column a), column b) right?

Without further ado…here's some photos, and fun facts for your viewing entertainment.

Fun fact #1: Two years ago today, I photographed Janel & Kevin's wedding on a severely sprained ankle. A fact that Jen reminded us all of, just as she climbed into the weeds in her heels for one of these images.

Fun fact #2: Jared and Jen "got hitched," in the very same church that my husband and I did in 2008. Immanuel Baptist Church, on Park Avenue is quaint and beautiful, and personal. Walking in brought on a wave of nostalgia, and took me back to the day I said my vows.

Fun fact #3: Timing is everything. We arrived at Cobb's Hill and began our bridal party photographs, 30 seconds before three other limos pulled up behind us. Our careful pre-planning, and perfect timing gave us first "dibs" at creating beautiful images.

Fun Fact #4: There were three of our former wedding couples in attendance. We're pretty sure that's some sort of record. It was SO good to see every one of them at the reception at the Whittier Party House.

Having gotten to know both Jared and Jen, more and more over the past year, we are confident that even if everything didn't go exactly as "pinned," we know it went exactly as planned. Because, in the end, none of those little details matter.

No amount of pinning, planning, or decorating could change the amazing outcome of this day.
Two beautiful people, in love, got married. To us, that's all that really matters.

The fall is a great time of year for family portraits, that's no surprise, ask any photographer.
Fall colors, pumpkins, weather, foods...what's not to love?

It's been an honor to capture this family throughout the years. They are the first family to hire me, and for that I'll always be grateful. It's almost like we're growing with each other. This time around, they've added another little cutie, and I know, Mom, Dad, & Big Sister couldn't be more excited.

Lots of hugs and kisses were doled out during our session. There was such love all around, equally I might add. When I asked Big Sister who she wanted to give a kiss to, Mom or Dad...she hugged them both close together, and attempted to give both a kiss on the cheek at the same time. Super cute.

Sam and Jay's wedding day was everything we dreamed it could be and more. The weather was perfect, the bridal party looked beautiful and were great to work with, and the locations were fun and unique. We were in photographic Heaven; it was like a dream. And we were lucky enough to document the dream.

But enough about us, let's talk about Sam & Jay.

They had been waiting nine years for this day to come. When it finally did, they made the most of every moment.

The house buzzed with pre-wedding excitement when we arrived.

This was our second ceremony at Holy Cross Church this season,
and like the first, it did not disappoint with true emotions, both of love and laughter.

Sam and Jay love the city life, and spend a lot of time together at Village Gate. So, to fit their style and personality, we took the bridal party there for more fun together. It's probably not normal to lay down on the sidewalk in front of a city building, but we do what's necessary to get the shot. It was worth it!

The reception was held at the newly renovated Hyatt Regency, in downtown Rochester. We couldn't get enough of all of the great areas inside the hotel to photograph. Thankfully, Sam and Jay were gracious enough to go along with all of our ideas to create some great art.

The details, down to the stationary and table numbers (designed by the Groom) showed their style, and elegance perfectly.
Nothing was left untouched, even including some milk and cookies as the party continued.

We couldn't help feel like we were more than photographers to Sam and Jay. Along with their friends and family, they welcomed us into their lives, and made us part of the party. When we left, we loved knowing that their wedding went exactly as they had dreamed it would.

Sam and Jay, we're so happy to have met you. You're an amazing couple-sweet and loving, not only towards each other, but to all those around you.
Congratulations, and thank you for allowing us to be part of the party.

In the days leading up to Lisa and Todd's wedding, it was clear to me that this couple is loved by so many people. Everyone had been looking forward to this day for so long, when it finally arrived-it was beautiful.

No detail was left untouched, from Lisa's beautiful dress to the "Tiffany & Co" feeling at the reception. The gentlemen were handsome in their bow ties and tuxedos, while the ladies looked completely elegant and gorgeous from head to toe.

The ceremony took place at Holy Cross Church, in Charlotte. There were several touching moments, along with a bit of humor that made it perfect for Lisa & Todd. Notable among the them, was when the Officiant let the congregation know that this wedding wouldn't have happened without him. Literally. Years ago, he was the officiant at Lisa's parents' wedding.

Despite the heat, we went over to Charlotte Beach. We got to enjoy the carousel, and spending some time with them together. Every time Todd kissed Lisa, a smile came to her face.

The Riverside Convention Center Ballroom was decorated to the nines. It truly felt like we had stepped into Tiffany and Company!  From the candelabras to the wedding cake, I believe it fit their vision exactly.

From there, the party began with a bang. Their first dance was sweet and fun, with the bridal party getting in on the act.

Even the Father-Daughter dance was a hit! Man does Lisa's dad have some MOVES!

Todd & Lisa, I wish for you a lifetime of love, surrounded by all of the friends and family that helped make your wedding day complete. Congratulations!

It's hard to believe, but it's already been 6 months since I last photographed this little peanut.
I don't know if it was me, or the teething, but she wasn't too terribly thrilled to see me the day I came over.
I'm going with teething, because really, who wouldn't want to see Auntie Erin?
It's obvious that she doesn't know yet that I'm her favorite Aunt.

Regardless, in between her moments of chaos, we captured some beautiful little smiles.
I'm so lucky to get to see this smile as she grows up.

If I could read her mind, I think she'd be saying "What are you looking at bear?"

I swear, sticking tongues out must run in the family...

This time around, Mom and Dad got in on the photo fun too! Adorable.

We couldn't resist putting her back in Daddy's chair to see how much she's grown. See her newborn photo to compare!

She's growing so fast! Soon we'll be chasing her around for her 1 year old session.
This is just one more reason that I do what I do... because you can't stop time.

This past month, two special birthdays were held. One for my nephew's 1st birthday, and one for his big sister's 4th birthday.

My niece, is a Disney princess girl, to the core. She's the prettiest princess, with a fashion sense that no woman can rival. She's even pretty in pink when she's got her new golf clubs in hand or riding her bike in the driveway. Love her.

My nephew is happy to play with a shoe box, which isn't surprising...he's one, it's his job to be enthralled by boxes rather than the toys that came in them. He's a laid back, happy boy, without a care in the world. Love him too.

So while in Buffalo visiting the family, we explored Glen Park in Williamsville, NY. What a cute little park, made cuter by the addition of my family in photographs. I played in the water, we picked "flowers", watched the ducks in the pond, and took some great family portraits. 

Needless to say, I love being the family photographer. These smiles are why.

I honestly can't remember when I first met Allison. All I know, is that I've known her since elementary school.
We played soccer together throughout high school, her father was even my coach at one point.
I think it's safe to say we've known each other a very long time.

We've since grown up, began careers and married-and oh yes, they've also had their first child.
Allison and Tom's little one is an adorable, blue eyed little girl, with a precious smile and a contagious laugh.
When she called me to photograph their family in Buffalo NY, I was so thrilled.

It's not every day you get to reconnect with friends from years gone by, so thank you, Allison, for calling.
Your family is adorable, and I look forward to watching it grow.

Ah-dor-a-ble.

In 1957, it cost 6 cents to ride the Dentzel Carousel at Ontario Beach State Park. 

Tony only had 5 cents. At least that's what he told Sandy when he asked her for a penny.
Talk about the perfect plan to meet a girl and ask her out.

The rest is history. Their history.

55 years later, Tony and Sandy returned to the scene of the crime, to relive the day they first met.

I was honored to be called to help them commemorate this time of their lives. We met at the carousel last week, and within minutes, their stories and lots of laughter began flowing between us.
 

It was also fun to get to take a turn on the carousel with them!

Their story reminded me that getting married, isn't just about the wedding day. It's about the years that follow.

Through the ups, downs, twists and turns...

55 years later, Tony and Sandy still remember that day.
